Abstract This paper emphasizes the necessity of tourism studies in postmodern society. Reviewing the recent studies in China and abroad, the author raises some views on the new trends of tourism studies in postmodern society. The paper analyzes the concept of postmodernism, compares the characteristics of culture and society between postmodernism and modernism, and summarizes the characteristics of the postmodern society and the primary theories and contents that reflect the development of it. The author points out that the new changes of the destination and the time of travel will be influenced by the new structure of the society which will bring new thoughts and revelations for the development of tourism. Through analyzing the social characteristics of postmodernism and comparing modernism and postmodernism, the author points out that tourism has been changing in the new social background influenced by the ideological trend of postmodernism. The author also discusses the properties of the postmodern tourism, that is, an undifferentiated trend as a most important feature of the postmodern tourism. The author tries to tell that the new tide of the development of tourism through the three aspects of destinations, time and tourists. The change of the life style of people, the diversity of forms of tourism and the abundant connotations of tourism will definitely bring new challenges to the development of tourism. In the years to come, the diversity of tourism and the form and the discrimination of micro-tourism system will become the priority of research.
